In 2018, when vendors were being sought for a South Dakota Chislic Festival to be held in Freeman, we looked at each other and said, “Our farm needs to have a presence at that festival.” But what to make? We decided to create an original homemade ice cream: a simple, clean-label ice cream that showcased ingredients directly off the farm. Our experimenting must have yielded a pretty good product, because since then, several of our customers have asked us where they could buy Berrybrook ice cream year round. And that got us thinking….

Our personal definition of “clean label” includes ingredients that have not been genetically modified, and do not contain artificial colors, flavors or preservatives, or other substances. Whenever possible, we prefer to source certified organic ingredients. All ingredients in our original ice cream base meet this criteria; in time, we hope to extend it to all mix-ins as well.

We do not make a dairy-free ice cream for retail. We occasionally include a sorbet on our menu for special events.

Whichever one we’re currently eating! But in all seriousness, our raspberry and caramel brownie flavors are big hits at summer events. Butter pecan gets good reviews from all ages. More recent surprise favorites have included cinnamon and mulberry-rhubarb crumble.
